(Beginner's Luck #3)
Back
Intro: "E7 Beginner's Blues" is a tune intended for the beginning guitarist. The guitar part is presented in tablature format and a Real Audio music file is available so that you, the guitarist, can hear the music. If you don't know how to read tab you need to visit the Guitar Basics page. If you don't have a way to play Real Audio music from the web, you need to get Real Player. It's free and it works great.

Lesson: Listen to "E7 Beginner's Blues" while you look over the tab. Strum along with the music while it plays to get a feel for it. The chords and tab are presented below. When picking the notes, use an alternate picking technique. "Alternate picking" means that if you pick the first note with a down stroke, the next note should be an up stroke. Therefore, if you have four notes that need to be picked, and the first note is played with a down stroke, then the second note should be played with an up stroke, the third note with a down stroke, and the fourth note with an up stroke.

Things to keep in mind:

  1. Take your time learning this tune. Do not rush.
  2. Use only the very tip of the pick.
  3. Pick lightly.
  4. Relax.
  5. Practice hard, practice daily. If you can, practice in short intervals every day, throughout the day. For instance, setup a morning practice before work or school, setup up an afternoon or early evening session right after work or school, and go for it again sometime before bedtime. Keep each session any where from 10 to 15 minutes (but don't skip it if you can only do 5 minutes).

These are the first two measures. This tune is in 4/4 or common time. Every note that you will play in this tune is to be played as a quarter note. That means you are to play one note per beat. Therefore, there will be 4 notes per measure. 4/4 is called a time signature. The 4 before the / indicates the number of notes per measure. The 4 following the / indicates the type of note. Here's another example, 3/4 indicates that you are to play 3 quarter notes per measure.
