Listen to an F major 7 arpeggio played at the 8th fret.

The F major 7 arpeggio contains the notes F, A, C, and E. Listen to a Fmaj7 chord while you play the arpeggio and you will see (actually you will hear) that the arpeggio sounds very "in tune" with the chord. Experiment with playing the notes "out of order" to create melodies.

Fmaj7 Arpeggio

The first Fmaj7 pattern shown (top left) can be a pain to play, as can most arpeggios. Playing it will certainly give your little finger plenty of exercise. To master this fingering you will need to "roll" your fourth finger from the 3rd string to the 2nd string when ascending and vice versa when descending. Take your time learning these arpeggios. Be patient and don't give up.

Some tips:

  • Sing the arpeggio while you play it.
  • Play the arpeggio slowly.
  • Use a metronome to gauge your progress.
  • Have a friend strum an Fmaj7 chord while you play the arpeggio so that you can "get into" the sound of the arpeggio.
  • Compare the Fmaj7 arpeggio to the Fmaj7 chord to the C major scale starting at the F note. See the similarities?
